Mel Villanueva - Chief Investigator
Mel Villanueva joined our law firm as our Chief Investigator on August 1, 2006. Mel was a member of the United States Air Force from 1974 to 1980, when he was Honorably Discharged. While in the Air Force, Mel achieved the rank of SSgt, and was a Law Enforcement Specialist (Military Police). Then Mel joined the Austin Police Department, and served from 1980 until his retirement in 2003. Mel received over 1910 hours of various training while with APD—and was certified as a Master Peace Officer and Mental Health Unit Officer. While serving with APD, Mel received numerous awards and commendations. Mel worked in APD in the capacities of Patrol, Traffic Officer, License and Weight Division (DOT & HAZMAT certified / Highway Patrol Unit). Mel also worked HCU (which is now the Gang Unit) where he worked alongside the Robbery / Homicide division. Mel is certified by NHTSA as a standardized field sobriety practitioner and Breath Alcohol Technician. As a retired Police Officer Mel knows there are two sides to every story—and wants to make sure your side of the story is heard and investigated so it can be presented in Court.

Bubba Cates
Crime Scene Investigator
After being Honorably Discharged from the United States Marine Corps, Bubba Cates joined the Austin Police Department. Bubba worked uniformed patrol, was an undercover officer with the Special Crimes Unit, and a Detective in the Criminal Investigation Bureau. Bubba was then promoted and became a Supervisor of a uniformed patrol shift. Bubba was appointed by the Chief of Police as Supervisor of the APD Vice Squad, Organized Crime Division. Bubba received numerous citations, medals, and letters of commendation during his career with the Austin Police Department. Bubba joined our firm in 2008 as our Austin area investigator. Bubba received his National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) Certification as a Standardized Field Sobriety Test Practicioner in 2009 and also completed the Breath Alcohol Technician Course regulated by the United States Department of Transportation and is a certified Technician of the Intoxilyzer breath testing machine.
