SA Police Cover-up

San Antonio Police are investigating seven of their officers for allegedly covering up a DWI accident of a fellow officer.  KENS 5 did an article on this case, and I have to wonder if there is any chance this officer, or the seven that have been accused of covering up for him will get a fair shake from police administrators, courts, or the public.

Police officers are supposed to be under the same laws that all of us are under.  They are not supposed to get unfairly advantageous treatment under the law.  And, academies often teach cadets that they are held to a higher standard because the public places so much trust in them.  I agree in principle with the first two statements, but am becoming increasingly skeptical of the last one.

If this sergeant was intoxicated I am sure the police will present the evidence of such to the prosecutor's office and ask for charges to be filed.  (From what this news report says, however, I see some serious scientific and evidentiary issues with the urine and blood samples that were collected from him.)  But, after this news report - and the endless ones that will follow - is there really going to be a jury out there that will not have an opinion about this case before it even begins?

I'm not blaming the reporter.  She did a fine job of remaining objective.  I do question why a press conference was held, and why so many details were released.  Regardless, I would encourage all Bexar County residents to remember that this sergeant is also innocent until proven guilty.  He deserves the same open minded juror that you or I expect if we were charged with a crime.
