We are, ostensibly, a nation led by the people we choose to lead us. Our policies and laws are created, generally, by the people we put in office to create them. Yet, every election cycle seems to show that Americans are less and less interested in deciding who will lead us. Voter turn out is astonishing low, while the approval ratings of our current leaders are even lower. That is why today I am talking about this year's upcoming elections. Now is the time to get interested in the upcoming November elections. If you wait until you are standing in front of the polling booth to decide who you will vote for, then you are not making an informed decision, but are appeasing the apathy that some current office holders count on to retain their positions of authority.
I am not trying to tell you who to vote for. I don't even know who I'm going to vote for in almost any race that comes up this year. I'm merely suggesting that now is the time to get your feet wet and start learning what you need to learn to make the best decisions possible come November. We all lead busy lives, but so did our forefathers; so did the countless men and women who left their jobs, family and lives behind to join the military after 9/11; so did the young college and high school students who were drafted to fight in Korea and Vietnam.
All citizens of our nation owe a debt to those who came before us, and who are with us still today, who put their lives on the line to give us the freedom to decide who will lead us from the present to our destiny. We owe it to our children and grandchildren who will live under the laws and burdens created by today's leaders. We owe it to our neighbors who languish in jails and prisons because of unfair laws and prosecutorial practices that have denied them justice.
Now is the time for us all to get interested in the Senator's, Representatives, Judges, District Attorneys, and all other positions that are elected by We The People. If we do, then our future will not be decided by yesterday's lack of interest, but by today's lack of action by our elected leaders .
